Well, enough of all that statistical probability jiggery-pokery. Instead, go read this article about which I ask, ‘What do they mean about black cats being bad luck?’
I had a black cat. His name was Primo, which I took to mean #1. Some years later, our teenagers who picked his name told me it had to do with some kind of illegal drug.
But I’ve been told all black cats are good. I was told this by a spectral spirit named Balthazar.
Black cat walking cross my path . .
To be the droll scientific one for a bit:
Black cats are generally closely descended of the feral population of an area. Natural selection favors jet black in the places people inhabit.
To be the fruity philosophical one for a bit:
It is interesting that the felines best adapted to life around high populations of humans (feral farm cats are generally tabbyish) are the ones we consider evil doers and vessels of some weird satanism.
black cats are plain? that never occurred to me before. I always thought a pure black cat was kind of rare and to be appreciated.
I wouldn’t want a white cat, now that’s plain.
what does glitchy have to say about this?
I’ve always ended up adopting cats for reasons having nothing to do with their coloring, but if I were using that criterion, all-black would be probably my second choice (following all grey). My first cat was all black and I think they’re gorgeous.
Canadian hairless is the way to go.
Catalyst: Yes, but whose side is Balthazar on?
Malach: You betcha. Stray off the Information Superhighway and make a turn down an Information Hedgerow and that’s all too likely.
Casey: Hey! I’m the droll scientific one. Oh, OK, very well, for a bit then.
As to the rest, I agree, except for the word ‘consider’. Consider? Consider? You haven’t been paying attention.
nursemyra: Besides, as the article says, the #8 Reason to Adopt a Black Cat is ‘because holding one is very slimming’.
Glitch just looks inscrutable.
Hypatia: Hello and welcome to The Cow! All I can say is that I never planned to have a black cat either, but that I do, no-one seems to find all that surprising.
Atlas: Canada has a lot to answer for.
Where I live the local SPCA’s (animal shelters) will not adopt out black cats in the month of October or November because of Halloween. Interesting.
I love cats regardless of color. Never had any more bad luck with a black cat than I did with a tabby. They all end up becoming your owner and you there servant.
There was a news piece on the ABC this morning where a Sydney water employee refused to read the meter because there was a Black Cat. The Vice president of the Skeptics Society agreed that this was perfectly acceptable……. behaviour :)
