Big Bang Theory

This morning’s Sydney Morning Herald ran a front page story on a murder that appears to be the result of a dispute between two Sydney biker gangs. Police believe that Russell Merrick Oldham fired three shots at Rodney ‘Hooks’ Monk at close range, and then fled the scene.
The paragraph that caught my eye, though, came further down in the article where Russell Merrick Oldham is described:
“Oldham is the Bandidos’ former sergeant-at-arms (he lost the post when he went to jail for five years for the manslaughter of two men at Bankstown in 1998)… He has a passion for astronomy and a history of violence.”*
Ha! My coffee went through my nose and all over the crossword. I wish I’d been scanning police radio last night…
“All cars are advised to be on the lookout for Russell Merrick Oldham, wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Central Sydney. When approached, suspect may attempt to engage in debate over the existence of zero-point radiation at black hole event-horizons and whether NASA should spend money on repairing the Hubble telescope’s failing gyroscopes. He is believed to be armed, violent and highly philosophical. Advise extreme caution.”
The history behind the nickname of Rodney ‘Hooks’ Monk is unfortunately not covered in the article.â€

*Not that I’m supposing that a biker, or anyone, shouldn’t have a variety of hobbies and interests. It’s just the juxtoposition with his other hobby…
†I wish it had’ve been spelt ‘Hookes’ and then we might have speculated that Rodney’s hobby was microbiology. That would give us the unparalleled opportunity to suppose that the disagreement between Rodney and Russell was over some point of scientific procedure. Oh, the joy!
I am a little disappointed to see that Russell Merrick Oldham doesn’t have a nickname.‡ If ever there was a bike gang member that deserves one, it has to be Russell. Maybe I’ll run a competition and we can send it to him in the slammer.
‡Unless he is named after Joseph Merrick, the ‘Elephant Man‘, and I really don’t want to think too deeply about that…

[…] A rather sad coda to the story of feuding bikers Rodney ‘Hooks’ Monks and Russell Merrick Oldham. […]
“Passion for astronomy” is code fer “likes t do it doggy-style,” Revrend. Thats how come he killt Monkey Rod — or whatevr th othr guys name was. “Hooks” … he dont like hooks.
What surprises me is the “lost the post” as sergeant-at-arms part. Seems like he’d have been promoted, though possibly in absentia.
I like Beethoven and ultra-violence.
Two more chips of info: Oldham made his get-away in a taxi; and the fatal shooting occurred directly opposite the gallery exhibiting some marvelous Aparent Photographs entitled ‘Biologika’ by an artist not unknown to the Cow.

russ was my uncle you cunt shut the fuck up noone knew him the way i did, he wasn’t violent you have no idea why he did what he did.
you sick fuck.
Really sorry for your loss Blake. He was a lovely bloke. He was very kind to lots of people. Russell was very intelligent yet part of him was just a big kid looking for an adventure. I don’t think he meant harm to anyone and because he looked for the good in others I don’t think he sometimes realised that others he associated with weren’t always so honourable. I knew him before he was in any kind of trouble and I was devastated to see how life took the wrong turn for him. I now have two lovely boys of my own and already I am doing lots of parenting courses to try and prevent anything so tragic from occuring in our lives. I know though we can only hope and pray life is good for our kids. My heart felt sympathy goes out to your family.
I apologize if I have offended you Blake.
I truly admire a man who has an interest in the stars and leads a life that is far from boring. I hope your uncle is in a better place than here.

Just thinking about Big Russ today. I knew him about 20 years ago. He was a lovely bloke. He was working in for AMP as a financial advisor and also worked as a doorman at the Hero of Waterloo. He used to come along to some of my work functions and it used to look quite comical as I am only 5ft tall. Talk about the odd couple. Very sad as he was a smart guy with a lovely nature
I’m kinda liking that Big Russ’s friends are meeting here. I wish I’d known him.
