This extraordinary creature is a Benthic Holothurian. It was photographed swimming in the waters above the mid-Atlantic Ridge where scientists have discovered ten possible new species of marine life.
See more beautiful pictures by David Shale on The Guardian site, and marvel at the mysteries of our beautiful planet.

No sale, Revrend.
Thats th new Klingon Warbird.
Hmmm. I can see that it’s conceivably a cling wrap hot dog…
I saw some of the pics yesterday some amazing creatures down there
C’mon Rev own up, that’s something you knocked together on the computer isn’t it?
Holothurian, sounds kinda 3D and trendy. I look forward to watching the Benthic Holothurian Legends at my local cinema…
The King
It does pique my artistic interest, that’s for sure King Willy. And as you shall see in due course, these wonderful creatures continue to be an inspiration to me.
My favourite is the Batlypelagic Ctenophone. (Are you sure the Enteropneust isn’t just a used condom? and the one beside it a discarded teabag?)
Awww… Nurse Myra. Way to soggy up the wonder! And no comment about the names themselves? Pretty great, wouldn’t you say?
Is this part of your cunning plan to drive Guardian hits up, to make Rupert feel bad?
Any of these eat oil and excrete oxygen?
We should be so lucky. I think there might be some of those on Titan, but we’ll be waiting a few billenia for some results there.
Good luck in LA Rev, hope to see more posts soon!
The King
Oh… don’t you worry King W! This is the land of TRUE inspiration for the Cow. Why, I’ve just seen three potential subjects for scrutiny in ten minutes, and if I wasn’t so goddammned jetlagged, you’d be hearing about ’em right now!
