This morning at dawn in the city of Sydney, before the espresso machines of Leichhardt had sputtered into life, Violet Towne, HeWhoHears, Kezza and The Reverend headed off towards the Western Suburbs to witness the launch of the 2007 Festival of Sydney with a performance of Luke Jerram‘s beautiful Sky Orchestra.
Yes, we really did get up at 5am.
Words simply don’t meet the task of describing the wonder of seeing and hearing these seven hot-air balloons rise into the light of the rising sun, and drift off across suburbia singing their haunting songs.
All I can say is that if you ever get a chance to see this inspiring work, make every effort to do so. You won’t be disappointed. Luke Jerram is a genius. I’ve said as much before, and I see no reason to change my opinion.
Im sayin thems probly weathr balloons.
Sorry for the off-topic, but I’m trying – and failing – to wrap my mind around the meaning of SGM’s legs shown 3 or 4 meters above ground. Walking on air? Extreme pole-dancing? A pin-the-torso game for giants?
Also I’m listening to Sky Orchestra samples via one of your links; mighty fine stuff, this.
Art has elevated SGM – indeed he is walking on air, inspired by the strange beauty of the music and the sky vehicles. For a moment he transcends the mundane, nay, brutally dangerous, earthbound world he inhabits – ah brief moment.
You guys read too much into signs. Clearly it’s meant to warn people of the wild legs that make up the population in the area, much like a cow or deer crossing sign.
Cissy Strutt has hit the nail on the head.
Either that, or the sign is a warning to watch out for balloonist’s legs dangling down.
